Community Transit Volunteer Service

Serving Lyon, Redwood, & Jackson Counties with limited service in Cottonwood and Lincoln Counties to various destinations. Registered volunteers provide rides with their vehicles when buses are not available. They are greatly appreciated for the service they provide.

Trip requests are accommodated based on the availability of volunteers. Rates range from .35 - .90 per mile and are calculated for all driver miles. The minimum in town rate is $3.00 one way.

Volunteer Driver Responsibilities

  • Drivers will call passengers prior to scheduled pick up.

  • Drivers will be punctual (not too early, not too late).  Drivers should not keep passengers waiting.

  • Drivers cannot make changes to trips or fares, without notifying transportation staff.

  • Drivers will need signatures of passengers or caregivers on driver vouchers.

  • Drivers will assist passengers by walking them to and from the main door of the facility to their vehicle.  All other assistance needed, transferring from a wheelchair into a vehicle for example, must be provided by the care giver, family member or escort. Report any concerns.

Passenger & Caregiver Responsibilities

  • When requesting transportation, provide all trip information: pick-up and destination addresses, phone numbers, pick-up times, appointment times, return times and payment details.

  • Passengers must be ready at the door at scheduled pick-up time.  Drivers are not to wait any longer then 3 minutes if they have other scheduled riders.

  • Passengers/escorts are responsible for medications to be administered or transported.

  • To prevent injuries to passenger or driver, we ask that family members, caregivers or escorts provide assistance such as lifting, carrying or transferring passengers and items.

  • If passenger is riding long distance that requires stopping to eat or bathroom breaks, passengers must be capable of accessing restrooms and covering meal costs.

  • If passenger is paying for the ride, correct payment must be given to the driver at the time the ride is performed.  The cost for the trip will be at a higher rate if payment is not made and billing becomes necessary.

  • Contact Dispatch Office for all trip changes or questions.  Dispatch hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.

  • Passengers must stay seated and buckled in safety belts while vehicle is in operation.  When traveling with a volunteer driver, car seats are mandatory for all children under the specifications of current child restraint laws.

  • Parents/Guardians are responsible to provide and install car seats and insure that children remain safely secured during transport.

  • Passengers must be courteous and respectful of drivers, their vehicles, and other passengers.

Community Transit has policies and procedures in place to guarantee all of our passengers the safest, most efficient ride. If you have questions about other policy or procedure, please contact a supervisor at 537-7628 or 507-847-2632.
