Western Community Action Head Start
Philosophy, Goals and Values

Western Community Action Head Start is a family-focused child development program.  The rate and potential for learning is greatest during the early years of a child’s life.  Therefore, many learning opportunities should be provided at the earliest possible age.  The basic responsibility for early education lies with the parents and within the home because the family is the most important influence in the young child’s life.

Head Start seeks to enable children and families to deal more effectively now and in the future with their responsibilities in school and life by 1) improving their health and physical abilities, 2) encouraging self-confidence, spontaneity, curiosity, and self-discipline, 3) enhancing their mental processes, 4) establishing expectations of success, 5) increasing their ability to relate to others, and 6) enhancing their self-dignity.  The program must involve the children’s families and the community.

Our program serves the family through education, health, mental health, nutrition, and social services.  As family basic needs are met, parents are better able to nurture the growth of their children.
