Head Start Parent Involvement

Parents are their child's first teachers. Your involvement is an important part of the Head Start program. You can be involved in planning and operating activites. Parents serve as members of home visitors' parent committes and can be members of Pare Council. All parents have a voice in how the program runs and what the program offers to children and families. Below are just some of the many ways you can be involved.

  • Observe and participate with your child at socialization.

  • Attend parent meetings.

  • Assist the home visitor in planning activities, field trips, etc.

  • Participate fully in scheduled home visits, socializations and conferences.

  • Become a volunteer or sign up to be a paid substitute in a Head Start classroom. This can also be a great way to gain experience toward employment.

  • Help plan parent training and ways to help other parents to become involved.

  • Encourage grandparents, other family members, and members of the community to become Head Start volunteers.

  • Attend educational workshops in your community. Head Start will pay a portion of the cost for 1 workshop for each parent per year.

  • Learn new parenting techniques and skills.

  • Be a Parent Council officer or representative for your parent group. Parent Council meetings are open to all parents, not just representatives. The Council meets on the third Tuesday of each month.

  • Be involved in program evaluations, advisory groups, and focus groups.

  • Help make needed repairs to toys and program equipment.

  • Be involved in recruitment of children and families.

The list is endless - There is no limit to the things that we, parents and staff, can do if we put our heads together. Let any staff member know of your interest.
