Head Start Parent Council
The Head Start Parent (Policy) Council is not just a parent /teacher association—it’s a governing body that makes important decisions about our Head Start program.
The Council is the parents’ voice in shared decision making for the program about such things as recruitment and selection policies, personnel policies, hiring, budgets, and funding proposals. In addition to helping to manage the program, Parent Council members have an opportunity to learn how to conduct meetings, enhance skills, and gain self-confidence in a supportive environment of friends. This experience can be a starting point for future leadership roles in school organizations, the workplace, and in the community.
At least 51% of the Parent Council members must be parents of currently enrolled children, and up to 49% may be of community representatives. The Council meets once a month on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. During the first or second parent meeting of theyear, parents are nominated and elected as representatives or alternates to the Council (two representatives, per teacher, and two alternates). Any parent may attend meetings, but only elected members may vote.
