Percent of elligible children served: approx. 43% of income-eligible children birth through four years of age in Cottonwood, Jackson, Lincoln, Lyon and Redwood counties.
Monitoring Review
The WCA Head Start program received an on-site review from the Office of Head Start at the Administration for Children and Families in 2009. The program was found to be in compliance with all applicable Federal Head Start Performance Standards, laws, regulations and policy requirements. Our state-funded Early Head Start program received an on-site review in summer, 2010 and was found to be in compliance with all standards and requirements.
Audits
Western Community Action underwent a financial audit in the spring of 2011 for the 2010 fiscal year and there were no significant audit findings.

Efforts to Prepare Children for School
Throughout each school year, Head Start observes and records each child's growth in the categories of Initiative, Social Relationships, Creative Representation, Music/Movement, Language/Literacy and Logic/Math based on a scale that ranks observed behaviors or skills from "0" (Simple) to "5" (Complex). The three- and four-year old children served in the Western Community Action Head Start program in 2010-11 began the year at an average rating of 3.0 across the board. In the spring, children's scores had improved to an average 4.2. Below is a breakdown showing average growth of 251 children enrolled in our program in 2010-2011 in those developmental areas.

This level of growth is made more significant in light of the fact that, for 27% of these children, English is not their primary home language
