Food Support Program Outreach
Some people still call them “food stamps,” but the new food support program called SNAP (Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program) is one of the most under-used program that people in our area have available to them. In fact, our area has some of the lowest participation rates in the state of Minnesota. Because SNAP is a program that provides people with funds to use to purchase food each month, they are able to use other parts of the income to meet other needs they have like housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and things for their children.
In addition to helping people directly, SNAP also provides a boost to the local economies where people buy their food! Funds from the program are federal, and if people who are eligible do not participate, our state loses out on those funds. In fact, because those dollars are normally spent very locally, it’s important for all of us to encourage those who are eligible to apply and access those funds because the increase in sales that our grocery stores could see could actually create jobs!
In addition to public outreach surrounding the program, Western Community Action staff also aids people with application assistance. The paperwork required to apply for the program can seem overwhelming. For that reason, Western Community Action has trained staff in accurately completing applications and gathering needed supporting documents. If you would like assistance in completing your food support or “SNAP” application, please contact our office!
