Food Shelves
Western Community Action food shelves utilize volunteers to provide nutrition assistance to individuals and families using the “client choice” model. People are able to select the foods that they and their families need and will use, increasing the usefulness of what is given to them. By filling out minimal paperwork, volunteers determine their family size. The more people in their family, the more food they are given. Our guidelines are to have people visit our food shelves approximately once per month, but additional visits may occur for people in extreme need or crisis.
We have recently added two new food shelves to our program Mary & Martha’s Pantry in Westbook and the Heron Lake/Okabena Food Shelf in Heron Lake. Our food shelves provide individuals and families in need, with food and other personal care items, using a “client choice” model. Using this model clients are able to choose their own food items that they like and will eat. Eligible households may access the food shelves approximately once per month. Each food shelf is open standard hours and also on call as needed.
